By participating in the care of our mock trauma patient, Will, what did you learn about working in Vanderbilt's Level 1 emergency department?

I learned a lot about the steps that are taken when a patient comes into the ER. There must be order and the team of doctors/nurses/residents/fellows must all work together in order to get things done in a timely and efficient manner. "ABC"--airway, breathing, circulation are the first things that are checked. From there the surgeon will decide what needs to be done.

I learned through the ultrasound that I'm not pregnant (thank God). But, even just lying on the stretcher the whole time was fascinating. Learning about the incredible teamwork used in the ER Trauma was very interesting. I was amazed by the time it took to get the patient from the door of the hospital to the door of the CT or MRI rooms. As little as 8 minutes. I thought that was incredible.

What immediantly pops in my head are the ABC's. Airway, breathing, and circulation are imperative when analyzing an incoming patient and that is what I learned. I also discovered the many different roles of not only an ER doctor, but also of the responsibilities of the residents, intern, surgeons, nurses, etc...The costs also shocked me--that it costs $15,000 for a CT scan alone--that's incredible.

I learned a lot about what doctors must always look for and the ABC's of trauma. I also learned how doctors can check the airway and intubate, and I never realized how many doctors and nurses it takes to work on each patient. I had no idea how much it costs for things like a CT scan. I also really liked seeing the ultrasound and was glad to know Will isn't pregnant.
